Since 1926, our fourth-generation family-owned business has had the privilege to deliver quality energy products and expert services to our community in the Lower Hudson Valley. Generally, it’s a friend, neighbor, or coworker telling another about their exceptional experience with Durkin. Each encounter we have is an opportunity for us to exceed customer expectations and build relationships, which is how our company has grown and prospered over the years. For nearly a century our commitment to fairness, honesty and promptly serving the customers’ needs has allowed us to earn the trust of our neighbors through the decades.
BECOME A CUSTOMER
A.J. Durkin – Coal & Feed was established in 1926 with a great deal of determination to provide quality products and service to the local community offering farm supplies, feed, and coal. Located in the heart of Brewster NY.
Andrew began growing the business and his reliable reputation within the Brewster community and was busy raising a family. His sons Andrew (Drew) and James Durkin began working for their father in their early teenage years.
His sons and company were dedicated to helping neighbors satisfy their home heating needs, delivering anthracite coal by the bag and kerosene by the 5-gallon tote to homes and businesses in the Brewster area.
Just before Drew’s departure for service in the Korean War was a dynamic period in the energy industry as homes and businesses were rapidly converting their homes from kerosene and coal to reliable heating oil. Heating oil systems allowed for deliveries to be made in bulk and enabled the customer to no longer tend to their home heating system manually. They purchased their first bulk delivery truck.
Drew and James continued their father’s work and introduced a full-service and installation department to meet the new needs of their local market.
Growth over the years came as they continued to exceed customer expectations and provided each customer with exceptional service. Their growth led to widening their service area and opening offices and infrastructure in neighboring towns.
Drew’s sons Andy, Tom and Ray joined as the 3rd generation and continued their commitment to listen and serve the customer. They sought new ways to diversify the business offerings; further expanding their services to include swimming pool and drinking water delivery. This sector of the business would grow to keep their employees busy all year round.
In 2012 The Durkin’s entered the propane industry and continued adapting their business model to meet their ever-changing customer needs in the energy market. The 4th generation of Andrew “Drew”, Brian, and Jack Durkin joined help grow this department
Today, Durkin Water & Propane services the retail and wholesale sectors of the propane, fuel oil, pool water, and emergency drinking water market. We are still dedicated to delivering safe, exceptional, and personalized service our family has been providing for close to 100 years and still hold true to Andrew J. Durkin’s original values of fairness, honesty, and dependability.
